Open Rugby League
1977 was not a successful year for Monaros Open League team. This was due mainly to injuries, a lack of fitness and the fact that most of last years succesful team had left school. Four matches were played, rusulting in two draws and two losses.
After a short preparation, we faced Queanbeyan in the University Shield clash. Brilliant atacking five-eight, Martin McGee, missed this encounter due to a corked thigh he sufferedduring earlier selection trials. Monaro started well but relaxed in the second half letting Queanbeyan in for some very easy tries. Queanbeyan won the match 20-9. Our tries were scored by Tom Kyle, Barry Podlich and Stephen Muggleton.
Our second match was against Bombala. A tight game with play mostly restricted to the forwards. Halfback James Millner scored a determined try when he forced his way through six defenders to score close to the posts. Our other tries were scored by Barry Podlich and Brett Bieler. The gameended in an 11 all draw.
Next in line was an inter-school visit match against Bega. We entered this game without Captain David Jenkinson after he injured his leg in a weekend match. The Monaro backs were playing well and making many good breaks but without 'Jenk" calling the shots, our forwards succumbed to the power of Bega's bigger, more experienced pack. Bega won 23-0.
Our last match of the season ws the return bout against Queanbeyan in an inter-school visit.
Monaro's early tries were scored by Brett Bieler and Tony Podpera. But Queanbeyan fought back and were leading 11-8 with seconds to go till full time. After a scrum win, the ball was passed quickly out to the star studded backline and ended up in the hands of reliable winger Ron Wheeler, who scored a great try in the corner. A difficult conversion attempt was missed and the game ended in an 11 all draw.
Every player had his moment throughout the year but a special mention must be made of DAvid Jenkinson. His captaincy was inspiring and his tackling was so hard I've seen opponents pull out their hair rather than play against him.
Doug Burgess always gave his best. His 'never say die' attitude to the game was something to see. BArry Podlich played solidly all year. The wholesquad was made up of David Jenkinson, Doug Burgess, Ron Wheeler, Stephen Rugendyke, Stephen Muggleton, Brett Beiler, Wayne Daniels, Martin McGee, Daryl Stores, James Millner, Barry Podlich, Greg Newell, Tom Magi, Brett Gorman, Tony Podpera, Tom Kyle, Salim Soukieh, Les Shingles and Scott Mitchell. Several younger players went well, promising a good team next year.
Thanks must go to Mr Pickering and Mr Brown for their time and effort in shaping the team and for their advice which helped many players improve.
14 years Rugby League
This team played two games - against Bega and Queanbeyan. Unfortunately they lost both games by large margins. Outstanding in a losing team was David Shingles. other members of the team need to learn the basic principles of Rugby League - for example, backing up and tackling.
In 1977 three teams were entered in the A.C.T. Schoolboys Rugby Union Competition - Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10
Each team played three games on a round-robin basis. The Year 9 team emerged winners of their group, went on to play the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the Grand Final against St Edmunds College, which they lost 18 to 9.
Overall it was a very sucessful year - the year 8 team playing their first season of Rugby Union, getting a good grounding in the fundamentals of the game - the Year 10 team never gave up, and were unlucky not to win two of the three games - the Year 9 team really excelled themselves with hard, tough, forward play and a fast backline. In the Grand Final against St Edmunds there was very little in it until the last five minutes when St Edmunds crossed for a converted try. A lot of credit for their success must go to Bill Priest for his coaching.
